Hi Chris,

First of all I wish you the best of luck in finding hen mate,;-) Laura is currently looking for a hen Cut-Throat so you are second on my list at the moment.:D

Diet will be the standard Mannikin type diet, Foreign Finch mixture as the staple diet, but with all of my own seedeating birds I offer various seed mixtures such as Canary mix, British Finch, Weedseeds etc etc.
The Red and Pannicum Millet sprays, Eggfood, Insectile mix and of course Livefood such as Mealworms and have I ever mentioned that Fruit Flies are a great source of Livefood?
Nest boxes accepted by Cut-Throats range from the standard Foreign Finch design to Budgie nest boxes and anything in between.
They can be a problem in a mixed collection sharing their space with other birds that have red in their plumage, but apart from that they aren't a particularly aggressive species.

If you intend on cage breeding then Cut-Throats don't tend to share the habit of Red Headed Finches in becoming alarmingly overweight in cages.

All the best mate, Paul.;-)

hello Paul

i know where theres cut-throats but they are too far away for Laura or Chris
so basically that post was absolutly no help at all/
it is debatable to how agressive this species is whether other birds have red on or not, my red heads i got from Alan Brown are still stunning birds even the hen is not fat and she eats all the mealworms, and they are kept in cages!!

Hi Paul & Matthew,

the cut throat i have was originally bred on a colony system along with a colony of red headed finches and never had any problems apart from the occasional hybrid (which if i'm right the one i have is bloody gorgeous!). the only spare hen(s) i have is a red headed finch.... i'd rather have a cut throat hen though
