Hi,

i can't help you with the cockateils however if you could give us some information on what their current diet is, what they are housed in (sizes) etc. that will help us give you the best advice possible

Hi 69ladystangfastback,

First of all do you have a shorter name we can use to reply to?

Regarding the Cockatiels, are you saying that you have a 40ft x 40ft indoor aviary or a 40 inch x 40 inch indoor aviary?
If their housing measures 40 inches x 40 inches than this will be too small for more than two Cockatiels.
Idealy to breed from one pair you would need an aviary measuring 6ft long x 3ft wide x 6ft high, or 9ft long x 6ft wide x 6ft high for two pairs.
The nest boxes should measure 16 inches high x 10 wide x 10 inches deep with an entrance hole measuring 2.5 - 3 inches across 2 inches from the top of the nest box, the lid should be removable and it would be best to have a side inspection hatch near the bottom of the box measuring around 5inches x 5inches, the floor covering for the base of the box can be a moist mixture of peat and wood chip or an upside down grass turf and a peat and wood chip covering.

In addition to the diet you have mentioned you should also provide Oystershell grit and Cuttlefish bone, you could also offer eggfood which should also be available from your local pet shop.

If these birds are in an indoor aviary/cage it would be best if you move them away from the window, during the Summer they may overheat without the opportunity to move into shade and during the Winter there is the danger of them catching a chill from draughts.

All the best, Paul.;-)
