As most of you know, I lost my hen quail a few weeks ago and she left behind a broken-hearted mate. :(
I couldn’t bear to see him wander the aviary with his head bowed any longer and Diane came to our rescue with another hen.
In the past I have felt very sorry for any new hen quail I have introduced to a cock bird, as it appears that it is ‘rape’ at first sight.
On this occasion the hen went into hiding for a couple of days and my cock bird made no attempt to greet her in the ‘normal’ way. Instead he has let her settle in and he has stayed well away from her choosing to sleep on his own out in the open.
This morning as usual, I put some mealworms in the quails’ bowl. He went over and took a worm out and took it to the hen and placed it about 6 inches away from her then he backed off. Slowly she wandered over and ate the mealworm and he repeated this act again at least 5 more times.
I have just been out to check that all is well in the aviaries and the two quail are snuggled up together in a corner.
I think this could be true love!
