Hi Trudy,
I don't know of any publication that covers the eggs of all Finches, if there is one it will be so complicated you would wish you never started reading through it.
Is there a particular Finch family that you would like to know the different measurements and colours etc?:-)
Paul.;)

Hi Paul not really. My chestnut breasted are using the same nest box as some of my zebras. There are some eggs in there but i am not sure which they are and i don't want to go investigating to soon they are white i think they are slightly bigger and pointier than zebras but not sure. That is what got me thinking that i have never see any info on the color of eggs, from some of the more common finches. Are all finch eggs white or are there diff colors.

hello Trudy
sounds like you are right in saying that the CBM's have laid as their eggs are slightly larger them zebbies.
there is a wide range of colours, though many eggs of finches and their allies are white.
many of the weaver and whydah eggs are a light green in colour,
some eggs such as the cuban finch, singing finch, saffron and jacarini finch are speckled with brown, as is the golden song sparrow, black-headed siskin, greenfinch and the gold finch, the majority of the eggs are the same shape. (though slightly differing) they are specially designed this way to do with rolling etc.
i wish that was my own personal experiences, but no, that information was taken from my egg identification chart in Russel Kingston's book on on Finches and Seedeaters.
i hope they are CBM, good luck with them, zebras will foster fairly well, i know in certain parts of the world they are used as a host species for whydah's in aviairies, they are not naturally a host species though... but thats another story

shame about the CBM, and not being able to get anymore hen bishops, good news about getting the whydah and aussies, do you have a mate for the whydah?

hi trudy
this thing with the dead in shell ,i think is down to the fluctuation in temperatures making the hens sit tighter when the temperature goes down on a night far below than what it should be at this time of year and there being no humidity to realease the chicks from the shells properly

I agree, Kenny. It is probably the most common cause of DIS.
Also, I've been doing some research lately, and in finches, believe it or not, ornithosis can cause lots of breeding problems, such as dead in shell and infertile clutches. I didnt know this!!! Now, I'm not toalking the DIS here and there...I mean a pair or pairs that consistently have problems that in the past have been proven.
Many times, finches show no signs of illness...but breeding seasons can be disasterous as far as not having any or very few chicks produced. Many times, a simple one-eyed cold can be the only obvious sign aside from breeding problems. And those eye colds dont always happen.
I learn something new everyday, LOL!!!

hi nikki
i think we all learn something new everyday in this hobby, people who have been keeping birds for years can easily learn stuff from someone new to the hobby as you tend to get stuck in your ways but i am always willing to give anything a try at least once if i think it will benefit my birds in anyway and make their lives a lot better

HI EVERYONE,
I'VE HAD A BIT OF LUCK IN THE EGG DEPARTMENT, NOT GREAT BUT BETTER THAN NOTHING.. MY ZEBRAS HAD A BABY HATCH ABOUT A WEEK AGO TWO OF THE OTHER EGGS DID NOT HATCH, DON'T KNOW WHY YET AS STILL IN NEST AND ONE DISSAPEARED.
MY BENGALESE CHICK HAS LEFT THE NEST, THE OTHER THREE EGGS HAD DIED IN THE SHELL?? BUT BEAUTIFUL LITTLE BABY AND DOING FINE.
MY VERY FIRST CANARY EGGS HATCHED THE OTHER DAY ONE STILL HAS NOT DON'T KNOW WHY YET AS STILL IN THE NEST, BUT BOTH BABIES ARE GROWING QUICKLY..AHH BLESS.
ANOTHER PAIR OF CANARIES HAVE JUST STARTED TO LAY ONE SO FAR, I HAVE THREE PAIRS OF COCKATIELS SITTING ON TOTAL OF ELEVEN EGGS AND A FEW MORE ZEBRAS EGGS.
NOT MUCH LUCK WITH THE BUDGIES, MY VIOLET WAS IN A BREEDING CAGE AND EVERY TIME SHE LAID AN EGG IN HER BOX THE NEXT DAY IT WOULD BE THROWN OUT ONTO THE CAGE FLOOR SMASHED, ANOTHER HEN LAID HERS FROM THE PERCH SO THEY HAD SMASHED ON THE FLOOR, SO I'VE LET THEM BACK INTO THE AVAIRY WHERE THERE ARE NESTING BOXES SCATTERED AROUND FOR THEM - FINGERS CROSSED.
I HAVE NOW AQUIRED TWO AFRICAN GREYS, ONE IS 19 YEARS OLD NOT SURE WHAT SEX AND THE OTHER IS 4 YEARS OLD AND D.N.A PROOVED HEN BOTH ARE TAME AND TALKING. A PAIR OF RED RUMPS (THE FEMALE KEEPS TRYING TO MATE THE COCK BIRD-NEEDLESS TO SAY WITHOUT SUCCESS) TWO PEACH FACED LOVEBIRDS, ONE BLACK MASKED LOVEBIRD, SEVERAL COCKATIELS, CANARIES AND MORE ZEBRAS, THATS THE LATEST UPDATE IN MY AVARIES.

Hi,
I'm Not So Happy Today, I've Just Checked On The Birds And The Smaller Of The Two Canary Chicks Has Died And The Third Egg Has Gone Over Its Hatching Date And If That Was'nt Enough A Spare Male Cockatiel Has Pushed Himself Into One Of The Nest Boxes Containing Three Eggs And Almost Come Between The Pair Of Cockatiels All Three Eggs Have Been Damaged And Were Freezing Cold He's Taking Over The Box Even Though He Has No Mate. He's Been Taken Out Of The Avairy Now And Placed Into Another Avairy Little Git.. I'm Really Gutted, But Thats Nature I Suppose.:-( A Very Sad Annie.
