Hello all,
Who here would be interested in offering or accepting birds for the above?
Due to recent restrictions regarding imports of foreign birds, I think the idea of breeding loans is even more important than it has ever been.
Please post your ideas on the subject.

I think it's a great idea. I'd love to be able to find people locally willing to do the same. But...you know how we Americans can be, LOL!
If I lived closer to Roxie...I'd be on it in a heartbeat!

hi paul,
id be willing but theres got to be security measures in place so if the person who loans the bird has it and it dies then they have something to fall back on plus proof of ownership.
Thanks
Dave

Hello all,
Nikki,
We have the same problems here in the UK, distance and trust are the biggest obstacles with breeding loans, although the idea of breeding loans is great in theory there are real and sometimes very sad problems in reality.:(
Dave and Matthew,
I agree with you both that certain measures should be taken before going ahead with accepting or offering birds for breeding loans, but at the end of the day there should be no problem if both parties share trust in each other.
The main problem these days is that to resort to breeding loans means that suitable partners simply aren't available,:( so if a bird dies while on breeding loan there is very little chance in replacing it, so should money be part of the deal if this was to happen?
If this was the case then I'm sure that many of us wouldn't entertain the idea of accepting other peoples birds on loan.
Here is an example, Dave lets say you have a Rufous Bellied Niltava cock in a well established planted aviary measuring 8ft long x 8ft wide x 6ft high, I have a hen of the same species housed in an indoor unplanted 6ft long x 3ft wide x 6ft high aviary and neither of us is willing to sell our birds.
So with you having the better housing available I offer you my hen on loan and hopefully we split any chicks produced 50/50, but if you were unlucky enough for my hen to die in your care then I would expect £100 from you.
For a start there would be no way for either of us in knowing the age of the birds, so how could I expect you to pay me £100 if you were unlucky enough to lose the bird I have loaned you?
At the end of the day any breeding loan will be individual, there can't be any set rules on such an arrangement and it all comes down to how much you want to see a single bird of a particular species in your collection in years to come and how much you know of and trust in the 2nd party.
Paul.

hiya all just read this thread I think its a good idea I also think a lot of truth has come out from your comments , I am very lucky to live Les than 3 miles from paul so he knows our set up and we know his so I would have no probs lending out any of my birds I also think that we on this site should know each other well enough by now to say yes I will or no I wont . its blind trust . just knowing the person loaning your bird will do the best they can for it just as I would , at the end of the day I can lose a bird in my Avery or someone else's we all have had this happen to us and been gutted at the loss , I for one would like to see this take off to benifit us all
